Who was Jesus? (Caesarea Philippi)

KBT design 4Luke 9 v 18 – 20

Mark 8 v 27 – 30 Matthew 16 v 13 – 20

Lesson Aim

To understand that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God

Hook 1: Pictures of famous people

Show a variety of picture of famous people from sport, television, pop stars, the royal family or politicians. After showing each picture ask who the person is and why are they famous?

Finally say that today we are going to think about who Jesus was and why he is famous.

Story tip: Make sure that the pictures are well known to children e.g. the only politicians they will know are the Prime Minister or the President of the USA.

Hook 2: Catchphrases in advertisements.

Show some catchphrases one at a time followed by the object being advertised. Ask after each advert whether the children actually believes the claim is true.

Then have the name ‘Jesus’ displayed. Ask why he is famous and then whether they believe the claims made about him are true. Use this to introduce Jesus’s question “Who do people say that I am?”

Story tip:

Try to ensure that the adverts will be well known by children not adults!

Application

In today’s story Peter said that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. Do you believe this? Have you asked Jesus to forgive you your sins and trusted in him for eternal life. Only the Son of God could forgive us and give us eternal life!
