Making Idols

Man and Child FishingIsaiah 44 v 14 – 22

Lesson Aim

To understand that idols are man-made.

Hook 1: Branch of wood

Break the piece of wood in two. With one half break or cut it into pieces, pile up the wood and pretend to light it. You should pretend to warm yourself on the fire and cook some food. Place a frying pan on the fire and act  out the cooking of some food.

With the other half of the wood take out a penknife and start to shape or carve the wood. After a couple of minutes stand the wood up and proclaim that it is a god and should be worshipped. Do not worry that the wood is not well fashioned the children will understand the implications of idol making.

Hook 2: Questions

Have you ever wondered who made God? What about idols who made them? Let’s find out what one of God’s prophets said about this.

Application

Explain to the children how idols are all man-made and are nothing more than pieces of carved wood, metal or stone. It is the true God who made everything and who should be worshipped.
